DIY Jewelry Frames

Who can't ever find their earrings or remember which earrings they even have? I garnered the idea of creating my own jewelry "frame" from Pinterest. If you are not already hooked on Pinterest, I'm sure you soon will be :). I started looking for a more viable option for my earrings because they were all in a nice compartmentalized stacked box, but as I started to get more dangly earrings I started to forget what I had. (I had sorted my studs from everything else, but it started to get difficult to find and remember what earrings I had even after that.) Here is what you will need to create your own DIY earring "frame":
  • Decorative radiator grate from Home Depot, here is the one I used - $20 (Lowe's may have them)
  • Unfinished wooden frame - $3 (Hobby Lobby or Michael's)
  • Spray paint - $2 (unless you have a frame you want to use already)
  • Tin snips - $10 (if you don't already have them)
The radiator grate may seem a little expensive, but I created a 10x10 frame and still had some left over so I'll be doing a second frame soon! When you go to look for the radiator grate, I suggest that you ask where the "decorative tin grate" or "decorative aluminum grate" is located because many people looked at me like I was speaking French when I asked where I could find this elusive grate. Thankfully, one guy knew just where it was. I believe it is over by plumbing :)

After you have your grate, I would spray paint your frame whatever color you want and let it dry for at least an hour. Ryan actually painted it for me before I got home from work one day, which was really nice, and he only did one coat because I wanted it to look a little rustic. When the paint has dried or if you are using an already purchased picture frame, you will want to measure the opening of the frame in the back and cut the radiator grate to match. It is very easy to cut with tin snips! I was nervous to use anything else to cut it in fear of mangling it since the grate wasn't cheap.

If you have backing in a previously purchased picture frame, you will want to take it out and leave only the grate. Then, put the grate in and push down the frame side pieces to hold it in. The $3 frame I bought at Hobby Lobby already had spots for nails, so we measured the distance between the holes and drilled a few nails into the wall. Finally, we stuck my new frame on the wall and starting putting my jewelry on display. Tada! It really only took me about 5 minutes to piece together and put on the wall after the paint had dried.

Ryan bought the black frame and put hooks on the back as a necklace holder and gave it to me for Christmas. I love them together!

With the leftover decorative radiator grate, I am going to make another picture frame earring hanger. I found an 8x10 unfinished picture frame for $2 at Hobby Lobby, so the total price for two DIY earring frames will be $27...making them $13.50 a piece! (I didn't including the tin snips because they went into Ryan's toolbox and will be used for later projects ;) ).

You may be asking, where are all of your long necklaces and bracelets? Well, I kept them on the old necklace organizer that I bought a few years ago at Hobby Lobby. They have some even better designs now and I think they are usually around $12. With a 40% off coupon, you can get one for $8!
